| Sycamore Grange Sheltered Housing |
This is one of eleven projects valued at £450,000 which we have carried out for Kirklees Council to install a residential fire sprinkler system in to existing sheltered housing accommodation. The driving force for installing the fire sprinkler system was the Council’s desire to provide the residents with additional fire safety protection. The sheltered housing consists of one and two bedroom apartments; in addition there are a number of shared living rooms and a communal kitchen area. The project was undertaken over a period of 8 weeks with the building being fully occupied at all times. This required careful coordination between Kirklees Housing department, the Warden and our site operatives to ensure minimum disruption to the residents. We also held meetings with the residents to explain the benefits of the sprinkler installation and what work would be involved in their apartments. The residential fire sprinkler system was designed and installed in accordance with BS 9251: 2005. All areas of the building were protected including plant rooms, corridors, communal areas and the apartments. A new water main was brought into the building to supply the fire sprinkler installation. A number of different types of fire sprinkler were installed depending on the constriction. In areas where a false ceiling were sufficiently deep concealed sprinkler were installed. However in many areas of the building did not have a void in which we could conceal our pipework and sprinklers heads. In these areas we carefully designed the pipework routes and sprinkler locations to minimize the appearance in the rooms and after our system testing the pipework was ‘boxed in’ and decorated. |
