| Straven House Fire Sprinkler system |
Straven House is a grade II listed building in a quiet residential area of Ilkley in West Yorkshire. Originally built as a private residence it has now been carefully converted to a Residential Home while retaining its charm and character. The home now offers 25 bedrooms for residential care, convalescence, palliative care and respite. To enable the home to retain its character and still meet with the stringent fire safety requirements set by BUPA and the fire service it was felt that a residential fire sprinkler system designed to BS 9251 would be required throughout the property. The system would allow for a more flexible approach to fire safety and allow the retention of the original design aspects. The sprinkler system was designed to blend in to the building in an unobtrusive way by carefully routing pipes and concealing sprinkler heads. In many instances the roof void could be utilized to conceal the pipe and sprinkler heads, in other areas sections of ceiling were removed to allow access. Where full concealment was not practical extra care was taken with the pipe runs and any exposed pipework has been painted to blend in with the surrounding area or boxed in and decorated. As the towns main was not adequate to provide sufficient water an independent water supply was installed which consisted of a water storage tank and pump set which was located in the in a disused area of the basement. The system was also designed to insure the system could be installed with a minimum of disruption to both the residents and staff with installation work localized to a small area each day. To assist the staff a detailed work program was produced but this was also flexible to allow for changes if needed by the homes management team. |
