| Prince of Wales Hospice |
The Prince of Wales Hospice opened in 1989 for day care and also has a 10 bed ward for residential care where patients can stay and receive medical and nursing care 24 hours a day. With the increases in legislation and introduction of the Regulatory Reform Order the Hospice was required to assess its fire strategy and with the help of the fire authority concluded that the installation of a residential fire sprinkler system would provide an additional level of fire safety to the ward at night. Our contract was to provide protection to the 10 bed ward and common areas with ‘cut off’ sprinklers separating the ward from the day care areas of the hospice and the system was designed to BS 9251 : 2005. Concealed sprinkler heads were used where only a small circular disk can be seen in the ceiling. After consultation with the water authority we concluded that a towns main connection would not be adequate to supply the sprinkler installation and we had to look at providing an independent supply. This consisted of a sectional water storage tank and electrical pump set which was accommdated in a GRP housing outside in the grounds of the hospice. This installation was carried out by our operatives during the day and being mindful of the patients and relatives minimised disruption and noise. |
