| Comet—Warehouse Distribution Centre | | Print | |
The Comet distribution centre required careful consideration when it came to the design of the fire sprinkler installation, as the client required considerable freedom to change the rack storage system. This type of flexibility is difficult to accommodate with a traditional in-rack and roof sprinkler system which is traditionally used for this type of risk. Armstrong Priestley, together with the clients consultants and fire underwriters, proposed to utilise an Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) sprinkler system which only requires sprinklers to be installed at roof level and which allows goods to be stored up to 12.2m high. ESFR systems are highly effective at not only controlling, but also extinguishing fires in large warehouse facilities with sprinklers only located at the roof level. However the use of ESFR system also imposes a number of constraints on the building design and this must be considered early in the projects if this type of system is to be utilised successfully. Armstrong Priestley experience in this field was invaluable in guiding the clients architect and design team at the early stage in the design process to the successful completion of the project. Armstrong Priestley also installed a fire hydrant ring main around the site together with its own water storage tank and diesel driven pump set.
